Notes & Reviews:
Rediscovered by musicologists in the twentieth century, Johann Caspar Kerll is known first and foremost as one of the more important Baroque organ composers before Bach. However, into the late eighteenth century, Kerll was considered one of the leading musicians in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and "one of the most skilful and able organists that the world ever produced" (as the music historian John Hawkins put it in 1776). Thanks to his extensive circle of students, Kerll's pieces were known throughout Europe and were still appearing in print in Italy, England and the Netherlands decades after his death; these works also had a formative influence on the generations of organists that followed.

Kogert illuminates Kerll on Wockherl gem in Vienna
Charging into the interpretation of pre-Bach organ music in addition to his special interest of modern works, Mr. Kogert discusses and then illustrates the compositions which once ranked J.C. Kerll among Europe’s esteemed musicians and composers. Such a lesson would be rich enough experience for a dedicated organ student. But it is merely the introduction, as the experience is enriched with the sound and history of Vienna’s oldest organ, now restored to beauty, quality, and prominence. The accompanying booklet provides a textbook in itself with history, composition notes, pictures, specifications, and performance registrations.
Mr. Kogert pursues an active career in concerts, classrooms, churches, and recording sites. Like a runner in an achievement marathon, he competes and compiles awards en route. Sharing his skills and sensitivity for the fine Wockherl organ and Kerll’s music, Kogert invites the listening audience to embrace the seventeenth-century musical world with fresh perspective.
The exquisite case of the organ, the devotion to correct and adaptive interpretation, the appreciation of the compositions and culture of the era, are all presented for an entranced audience. A student of European history, church music, organ building, or composition would find more than enough to maintain interest through this CD and beyond. A casual apprentice of casual music might not be so attracted, as this is an intellectual and academic experience for those interested in this era.
Restoration, performance, understanding, and dedication to the music and the instrument under the skilled talent of a modern musician revive an almost-lost part of music to the enhancement of the Twenty-first Century.
