Notes & Reviews:

Barbara Nissman continues her ten-part series of Recital Favorites with a program of 19th and 20th century music that also includes the first recording of Benjamin Lees' final work, the stark Visage written in 2009, for Ms. Nissman. The youthful romantic passion of Prokofiev's First Sonata is the perfect foil to introduce Schumann's large and experimental Sonata in f# minor. The Fourth Ballade of Chopin provides a dramatic conclusion to this virtuosic display of romantic bravura pianism. The Spanish composer Isaac AlbTniz builds a bridge with his piece Navarra that takes us from the bright color splashes of the Spanish countryside to the exciting rhythms of Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera's First Sonata. With an encore by the American George Gershwin, the souls of both these centuries are blended together with the melancholy of the blues. Described as "one of the last pianists in the grand Romantic tradition of Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and Rubinstein," Barbara Nissman connects the souls of the composers of the past to the lives of today's listener.
