Notes & Reviews:
Much has been written about the contrasting Italian and French musical styles at the beginning of the 18th century, but Telemann was among the first composers who attempted to fuse these contrasting styles into an expressive, emotionally rich church music. The three cantatas featured on this recording are all festive works written by Telemann for performance variously during 1716/17 and 1720 church years, and exhibit the composer's ingenuity at adapting the Italianate style for use in the Lutheran church. The music is easy-going, tuneful with moments of virtuosity and characteristic tone painting.
BBC Music Magazine
This selection of Easter, Ascension and Whitsun cantatas by Telemann is vividly brought to life by Ulrich Stotzel and his well-drilled musicians.
American Record Guide, July / August 2012
These cantatas are full of lovely and inventive music, once more proving to me that Telemann was incapable of writing a dull note. The four soloists, though of no great repute, are highly competent. The instrumental work in general is very fine. But the star of the show is the chorus: it is set at enough distance to acquire a kind of spatial glow, and its singing is absolutely gorgeous, whether in fast or slow Tempo.
