This is the debut recording of the young and adventurous Weimar Woodwind Quintet. The perfect blend from the great tradition of classical symphonic wind ensembles can be heard in the arrangement of Mozart's Magic Flute Overture. This is followed by the highly polished and sophisticated classical entertainment as embodied by Mozart's contemporary Franz Danzi. Finally, the down-to-earth and folkloristic elements are intricately woven into the music of the 1920s by Pavel Haase in his Woodwind Quintet in G minor.

This is also a wonderful performance of Danzi's quintet. You can find many other top rate performances of this work, but this one illustrates how musicians continue to push the boundaries of technical perfection. In contrast to the pieces by Mozart and Danzi, Elliot Carter's quintet, a seldom-performed show piece just nine minutes long, should resonate with a certain temperament that seeks the intellectually stimulating music of the past century. And the performance of Taffanel's quintet is also a delight.
