On this new choral CD, the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks under the direction of Peter Dijkstra performs works by Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler and Richard Wagner. This disc features unusual transcriptions such as "Isoldes Liebestod" and the "Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen" for 16 part chorus by Clytus Gottwald. Peter Dijkstra, who has been the artistic director of the ensemble since 2005, is prominent in the choral scene and has presented the ensemble together with both BR Klassik orchestras in a number of versatile programs.

Apart from the Strauss this disc is devoted to arrangements of music for solo singers. All the new versions are very nicely done and show a cappella singing at it finest, but I have to admit I miss the connection to the personal pain we feel when a soloist presents the same material. So while I have deep admiration for conductor Dijkstra and his outstanding chorus, I have to limit my greatest enthusiasm to the two mixed choruses of Strauss, which are extraordinary pieces (lasting 25 minutes), very beautifully done.
