Notes & Reviews:

A central figure in the arts in France during his lifetime, Déodat de Sévérac stressed the importance of distinctive regional character in music. He derived his inspiration from Catalonia and Provence, and the genial warmth of expression in his work is reflected in the radiant imagery of Baigneuses au soleil which was dedicated to Alfred Cortot. The two groups of En vacances, the first described as little romantic pieces of moderate difficulty, are dedicated to friends, relations or colleagues, while the Fantasy Sous les lauriers roses is dedicated to the memory of the composer's teachers. Volume 1 (8.555855) of Jordi Masó's survey is a Penguin Guide *** key recommendation. Volume 1 of Jordi Masó's recordings of Déodat de Sévérac's piano music (8.555855) carries top recommendation for its 'lucid and sensitive accounts' in the Penguin Guide. This long anticipated second volume - consistent with its predecessor in terms of recording location and superb performances - will be snapped up by collectors. Jordi Masó's wide repertoire, covering all periods and styles, with special emphasis on music of the twentieth century, has brought first performances of many piano works written for him by the foremost Spanish composers. He has recorded over forty discs, acclaimed by the most important publications. He is now recording the complete piano music by Joaquín Turina and Déodat de Sévérac for Naxos.

David's Review Corner
His playing is so perfectly delineated and shaped with that inherent understanding of the era and style of writing. Excellent sound quality and programme notes.

American Record Guide, July / August 2012
This is the second volume of a welcome series. Deodat de Severac, who studied with Chabrier, D'Indy, and Albeniz (he completed Navarra), wrote music of unassuming lyricism and quiet elegance. Unabashedly "regional", he based his piano art on French and Catalan songs and locations. This delicate and delightful music is well served by Jordi Maso, who plays with prismatic color and understated musicality. (His recent Naxos recording of music by Benet Casablancas was heavier fare.)
