Giovanni Bottesini: Ero e Leandro, opera in 3 acts / Mercier, Pasolini, Scandiuzzi

Album Summary

>Bottesini, Giovanni : Ero e Leandro
Conductor Ensemble Composer

Notes & Reviews:

"Ero e Leandro is an essence of sensibility, of forms' accuracy and the product of a strong artistic personality which wants to respect tradition and knows how to do it." Fernando Fraga (Diverdi) = Bottesini is remembered mainly as a double-bass virtuoso and as a conductor, but he was also a composer of some success; apart from several works for the double-bass he also wrote 7 operas. The best known, Ero e Leandro, was premiered at the Turin Regio in 1879 to great success.

BBC Music Magazine
Bottesini floods the piece with attractive melody. Anyone interested in Italian opera of the period (1879) will find it an enjoyable discovery. This live performance from 2009 has some untidy moments orchestrally, though conductor Aldo Salvagno generally steers it along effectively...Roberto Scandiuzzi's bass possess solid splendour as Ariofarne.

American Record Guide, July / August 2012
The recording comes from performances September 4-8, 2009 at the Teatro San Domenico in Crema, Italy. Recorded sound is excellent (as is so often the case with Dynamic). The singing of bass Scandiuzzi as Ariofarne is big and black, cavernous, with a lovely cantante rolling sound similar to Cesare Siepi. Mercier is a bit breathy and the tone tightens with pressed into the high register, but mostly she is a lovely singer. There is an eager passion to Pasolini's singing, on the tight, bright side, but worthy.
