Tippett (1905 - 98) wrote a total of 7 string quartets, along with 2 early efforts that he suppressed deeming the works too immature. Like the symphonies, the quartets heard on this disc span Tippett's development as a composer, and reveal his deep feeling and skill for contrapuntal music. Drawing on inspiration from Beethoven, who Tippett held a great admiration for, the quartets display a rigorous intellectual logic and stylistic features that bear the hallmarks of Beethoven's late style.

In the course of Sir Michael Tippett's extensive work as a composer, he produced a large body of works in many different forms including symphonies, operas, choral works, concertos and chamber music. He is perhaps best known for his oratorio A Child of Our Time and the Concerto for Double String Orchestra. His remarkable string quartets have not been well represented on disc, which is reason alone to welcome this two CD Brilliant Classics set of the quartets numbered One through Four. There is extraordinary music here - the 2nd and 3rd quartets are essential. Tippett's writing for the medium spans his entire career, and is clearly influenced by the late quartets of Beethoven. Rhythmically, harmonically and contrapuntally complex, there is a certain logical approach necessary to put this music across effectively, which the Brittens accomplish without sacrificing the beauty of the more lyrical sections. This is music that you will be happy to get acquainted with, and Brilliant Classics prices make it easy.

The Britten Quartet are incisive and assured in negotiating the diffuse aesthetic scope of Tippett's fascinating String Quartets. If only they had more of his humanity and sense of fun.
