Notes & Reviews:

Acclaimed English lutenist Anthony Bailes presents a fine selection of Dutch lute music of the 17th Century, the "Golden Age" of Dutch cultural and artistic history. Despite the lute being of utmost importance in the musical life of that era, most of its music has not survived and is rarely performed today. This recording allows us to take a closer look into this fascinating culture and into the work of Dutch lutenists like Vallet, Huwet and van den Hove, contemporaries to such well-known artists as Rembrandt, Vermeer, van Eyck and Huygens.

American Record Guide, July / August 2012
The music of the English is actually well represented on the program. Aside from Hove's 'Pavana Lachrimae', we have a short suite of dances by Emanuel Andriaenssen (c. 1554- 1604), who was active at the courts of Wolfenbüttel and Kassel at the same time as Dowland. The program includes the Dutch composer's 'Canson Englesa-Altra Canson Englesa- Saltarello Englesa'. Notes are in English.

Enlightening and Entertaining
Anthony Bailes – LUTE MUSIC OF THE NETHERLANDS – Carpe Diem

A retrospective sampling of late 16th and early 17th century lute music from manuscript and printed sources by a variety of mostly Dutch composers. Though much less well-known than English or Italian lute music, the compositions presented here, based on fantasias, dance forms and intabulations of vocal music, give evidence of a musical culture and instrumental tradition as interesting and varied as that found anywhere else.

Anthony Bailes brings this music to life with a scholar’s understanding and a virtuoso’s touch. The result is both enlightening and entertaining, which makes the absence of any biographical information about this artist all the more curious.

The recording itself, done in a German church, is very well engineered, taking advantage of the location’s natural ambient reverb to highlight the complete range of Mr. Bailes’ instrument.

One needn’t be a specialist to appreciate “Lute Music of the Netherlands”; the music is beautiful, the engineering flawless, and Mr. Bailes’ performance pure artistry.

Highest possible recommendation 10 out of 10 Oscar O. Veterano

Unusual Rhythmic Pieces
This disc consists of a number of short lute pieces from various composers from the late 1500’s to the early 1600’s. The liner notes go into descriptions of the lives of the various composers, at least as best they can given that in some cases little is known. The liner notes themselves are well written and informative.

The pieces from the Thysius Lute Book (the first six tracks) are particularly pleasant. The first of the two Gregorio Huwet Fantasia’s (track 7) is rather dark, whereas the second is much warmer and self-driving. Both are extremely well played. But the Nicolas Vallet pieces (tracks 8-11) have a distinctive European feel to them, perhaps owing to the fact that Vallet was French and settled in the Netherlands.

The set of pieces from Joachim van den Hove are wonderful, and more than a little bit difficult. But Mr. Bailes playing is crisp, warm, and articulate, making them truly a delight to listen to. Windeken (track 19) is just lovely. The last track on the disc is from Emanuel Andriaenssen, and it is jaunty and full of technically difficult runs, not that you would know that from listening to Mr. Bailes play it. Makes my fingers hurt just listening to it!

This is a wonderful disc, filled with lute music that is not typically heard but that is satisfying just the same. Every work on the recording is performed well. If you like lute music, you’ll love it. Highly recommended.
