Baljinder Sekhon's Lou is a fascinating piece for percussion and cello. Using Middle Eastern idioms and a predominantly plucked approach, Sekhon's composition is both a ritual dance and an ambient meditation. Nightshade by Stuart Saunders Smith lacks the determined pulse but also uses cymbals, bells, triangles, and tam-tams as percussion accompaniment. The solo violin is quite free, and several sections are seemingly noisy for no reason, with the sounds of metal banging covering melodic material. The Zheng and percussion concerto by Michael Sidney Timpson begins with aggressive timpani alternating with a fierce zheng. The instrument's strings are attacked as it snaps out chromatic motives. II uses each instrument in more nuanced ways, pitch shifting the timpani and sliding on the zheng. The work's finale, 'After School Rhythmical' is comical in its presentation of simply rhythms and even includes a freak-out section for the zheng player, encouraged by the other players.
