Notes & Reviews:
On this two disc set featuring Tchaikovsky's complete String Quartets and the Souvenir de Florence, the IPO Richter String Quartet tackles some of the most important works of the period. "It is a terrible irony," wrote Vladimir Ashkenazy, "that so much suffering and torment bequeathed us so much wonderful music." In 1875, following the death of Ferdinand Laub (the violinist who had led the first performances of his two previous quartets) Tchaikovsky experienced a creative surge that led to the third quartet, and arguably one of his greatest contributions to the repertoire.
American Record Guide, November/December 2012
The playing is assured and has impressive unanimity, but the performances strike me as unsettled and hectic. The recorded sound tends to emphasize upper frequencies and makes the instruments sound thin and wiry. I found that if I dialed back the treble a little and played these discs on my "mellow" system with the very "musical"-sounding PSB Alpha B1 speakers the sound can be pretty good.
