Notes & Reviews:

In late-1930s America the Great Depression raged on, affecting all parts of life, not least the arts. Whereas European violinists had once flocked to the U.S. to seek fame and fortune, now only performers of the highest qualifications and brightest musical personality could hope to launch a successful career. Such was Rene Charles (Zino) Francescatti. He was a seasoned 37 year old performer when he made his American debut, and he rose to become one of the world's leading violinists. This collection presents his best commercially issued recordings in new digital transfers.

American Record Guide, September / October 2012
While his repertoire was wide, Francescatti's recordings naturally emphasized French music, where he figures as a latter-day Jacques Thibaud. He has the same rich, dark tone; but while his phrasing is also very lyrical, it tends to be more tempered and neoclassical. This seems more of a generational difference than anything else. But when performing lateromantic works like the sultry 1954 Chausson Concerto heard here with Casadesus and the Guilet Quartet, he could lay it on thick in the older and more appropriate style. Casadesus and Francescatti were one of the great musical partnerships: fleet but firm, they traced a fine line between voluptuousness and decorum: very piquant, very French.
