Notes & Reviews:

The recordings of these two symphonies are from the years 2009 & 2010; they are the continuation of the Tchaikovsky cycle with Christoph Poppen - like the previous productions, they were recorded at the Saarbrücken Congress Hall in co-production with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra.

American Record Guide, July / August 2012
These are German performances. They are not as refined and ethereal as English performances (March/April) and nowhere near as big and splashy and emotional as Russian ones. I listen every week to a pretty German sounding American orchestra in Cincinnati, so I like this sort of thing. It has class. It's clean, well-tuned, utterly together. It's never sloppy or flamboyant. And German musicians handle fugues as if they were second nature to them - which helps elevate that typical Tchaikovsky fugue in the finale of No. 3. (It really wasn't second nature to Tchaikovsky; he needs the help.) I think I will keep this for a few years and see how it wears.
