Notes & Reviews:

Oehms Classics presents the first complete recording of an opera conducted by Kirill Petrenko. In summer 2013, Petrenko will conduct the Ring des Nibelungen for the composer's 200th birthday in Bayreuth. The Bavarian State Opera has appointed him its General Music Director as of the 2013/14 season.

The Guardian
The cast is decent, if not spectacular. Peter Bronder is reliable in the title role, and Wolfgang Koch is a slightly stolid Borromoeo.

American Record Guide, September / October 2012
The Frankfurt Opera orchestra is very good; and the Russian conductor Kirill Petrenko, using fleet tempos, injects some welcome excitement into this wordy work. Texts and translations and very good sound. The DG recording, conducted by Kubelik, is still, overall, the best recorded Palestrina; it has not only Gedda in the title role but also F-D as Borromeo.

Fanfare Magazine, September/October 2012
I fear the Palestrina conundrum will never be solved: If you don't care ardently for this opera, you won't want any recording; if you do, you will want them all, including this one, for Kränzle's Morone and for its gorgeous sound.
