Notes & Reviews:

To mark her return to the recording studio after releasing CDs of Tartini and Albinoni (both awarded a Diapason d'Or), Chiara Banchini joins forces with Jörg Andreas Bötticher to present her version of Johann Sebastian Bach's Sonatas for obbligato harpsichord and violin BWV 1014 - 1019. This interpretation is notable, among other features, for the use of a German harpsichord with the disposition 16', 8', 8', 4', freely reconstructed by Matthias Kramer (Hamburg, 2006) after Christian Zell.

American Record Guide, November/December 2012
Chiara Banchini was part of the second wave of period performance practitioners that began in the 1970s and 80s and concertmaster of the recently dissolved Ensemble 415. I do not recall having heard Jorg-Andreas Botticher before. Banchini plays with more expression and imagination than most other violinists do in this music, but in one or two spots I wish she would play with a bit more polish. Botticher shows that he is a superb harpsichordist with a wonderful sense of timing. He gets a glorious sound at the beginning of Sonata 3 with the 16' harpsichord with deep bass strings that he uses in this recording. He exploits its deep bass range in numerous other movements and always with taste and imagination. He also uses the lute stop in III of Sonata 4, and it sounds very appropriate. Through careful use of this instrument's capabilities, he expands its dynamic range aside from its range of colors. If anything, this set is a joy to listen to just because of Botticher's instrument. It almost steals the show. Topping it all off, Banchini and Botticher have an exceptional sense of ensemble. This is one of the top sets of these important works, so I would recommend it next to my old standby set by Fabio Biondi and Rinaldo Alessandrini (Nov/Dec 1996). This set includes the lovely Cantabile movement, S 1019A, with Sonata 6. Excellent sound.
