Notes & Reviews:

Hilary Hahn's adventurous musical mind reaches towards exciting new territory. With Silfrashe follows her down a daring new path by collaborating with acclaimed "prepared piano" artist/composer Volker bertelmann, known to music fans as Hauschka. From their shared classical background this beautiful album exploits fresh and daring textures, creating unexpected moods - some grooves upbeat, others meditative, all hypnotic, catchy, quirky. Guided by Bjork's producer, Valgeir Sigurosson, Hilary Hahn and Hauschka incorporated improvisation into innovative music for something utterly new. Silfra works as a full-bodied entity, something even greater than its parts. As Hahn suggests, "you're hearing exactly what evolved at the moment it came to life, in every second of this album. It was such a rewarding experience making the record that I get a little nostalgic when I hear it." "When you listen to this record, you are hearing the music the first time it was played. There were no retakes. These are the moments that brought these ideas to life." The album was recorded in Iceland - a symbolic location for the two of them between their continents of origin. Silfra, a rift just outside of Reykjavik marks the divide between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Watch out for this great work of prepared piano and violin, which surely indicates the musical chemistry between Hilary Hahn and Hauschka. Key track for this album (with single potential!) is Krakow.

The Times, June 2012
Worlds meet symbolically and literally in this dazzling place. Hahn and Hauschka improvised these 12 tracks on the spot in response. Much is eerily beautiful, making use of ethereal multi-trackings and wispy violin overtones...Not lyrical listening, but haunting, quirky and like nothing else.

The Independent, June 2012
A series of fascinating improvisations... Particularly effective are "North Atlantic", with its rhapsodic violin over a poignant two-note piano figure, and the 12-minute "Godot", an eerily melancholy alliance of hypnotic industrial pulse and keening solitude.

bbc.co.uk, July 2012
Hahn and Hauschka's music has an organic mechanical motion, emerging out of a world that could have been created by Jules Verne or H.G. Wells. There's a strutting roboticism, but all parts are made woody, wrinkled, leathery, walnut-crinkled and creaking like old bones.

Notes & Reviews:

Personnel: Hilary Hahn (violin); Volker Bertelmann (prepared piano).

Recording information: Greenhouse Studio, Iceland (05/21/2011-05/31/2011).

REVIEWS:

Mojo (Publisher) (p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his transatlantic convergence of innovative, virtuosic minds is a sublime advert for the possibilities of improvised 'post classical' composition."
