Notes & Reviews:
The compositions of Franz Krommer were prolific and interesting in many respects. "They have not been sufficiently appreciated in historical terms so far, their potential still unexploited" (musicologist Wilhelm Heinrich Riehl). Krommer was an artist in an age of transition: his oeuvre constitutes a bridge between the courtly style of the 18th century and the Romantic idiom of the early 19th century. Dimitri Ashkenazy began playing the piano at the age of six and then switched to the clarinet under the tuition of Giambattista Sisini. Since completing his studies, he has gone on to perform widely, both as soloist and chamber musician. Here, Ashkenazy and company explore Krommer's "Sinfonia Concertante Op. 70" and "Clarinet Concerto Op. 36."
