American Record Guide, September / October 2012
Warner is re-releasing all the Cetra 1950s Verdi operas. Of the three sets I'm reviewing, the Rigoletto is the clear winner - one of my favorites in a very crowded field. Taddei is splendid, one of Italy's greatest baritones, with a voice rich and powerful as well as gorgeous. Rigoletto's rage, sadness, and love for Gilda are all here. Bravo! What a pity Taddei never had a major career at the Met. Those debut Falstaffs were astounding. His great Verdi singing and acting at age 69 would put many baritones half his age to shame.
