Notes & Reviews:

Virgin Classics presents Rediscoveries - a brand new series devoted to the finest classical recordings that are no longer in print. The second edition is the irresistible and quite possible the finest Handel Songs album ever recorded, Handel: 9 German Arias HWV 202-210. Featuring English soprano and one of the world's most renowned early music specialists, Emma Kirkby captures Handel's spirit of music and poetry stylishly and with sensibility. Her open, innocent-sounding voice is a perfect complement to the text and her ornamentation of de capos is effortless, imaginative and spontaneous in effect; intonation is irreproachable and her diction crystal-clear.

Gramophone
I greatly enjoyed these performances of Handel's Nine German Arias when I reviewed the LP. From a purely musical standpoint there is little to choose between the two formats but, of course, the CD provides welcome relief from the clicks and other minor disturbances which all too often dog the LP. Just to refresh your memory the Nine Arias, with their texts by the early Enlightenment poet, Barthold Hinrich Brockes, are interspersed in this recording with the movements of an attractive Violin Sonata in F major. It is included amongst the sonatas of Handel's Op. I publication but, even so, may not be by him. No matter, for the notion of presenting the arias in this way seems tome an effective one and, as! say, the sonata itself is an engaging piece and fits well in the present context. The recording acoustic is ideal and both formats include Brockes's texts in English, French and Italian translations. Strongly recommended!

Handel releases have given me as much enjoyment as the recent EMI recording of his Nine German Arias with Emma Kirkby and London Baroque. Here, now, is another performance. This is, in fact, Elisabeth Speiser's second recording of the nine Arias for, as you may recall, she was also the singer in a Vox Turnabout release some 20 or so years ago (TV340245, 4/66 - nla). On that occasion she was supported by a variety of obbligato instruments of which the violin was but one. Handel did not name his intended obbligato instrument in the score but the character of the writing makes a violin seem the most likely and, in Jaap Schröder, Elisabeth Speiser has found a particularly expressive partner. The edition followed here, by the way, is the 1920 one by Herman Roth which offers what I'm sure is the wrong solution to the closing vitornello of "Das zitternde Glänzen". This has been put to rights in a more recent edition by Walter Siegmund-Schultze.
