This world premiere recording is the second installment of the Poenitz cycle on Brilliant Classics presents works for solo voice, accompanied by harp(s) and harmonium. Franz Poenitz was not only a virtuoso on the harp (as is clearly evident in the rich and complex writing for his instrument in this music) but also an accomplished painter, one of his creations adorns the cover of the CD.

A setting of Psalm 13 for mezzo-soprano and harp, from 1892, is reminiscent of Schntzin its spareness, its unobtrusive but affecting harmonies, and its skillful voice leading. For poignancy and understated drama, Poenitz's setting of Goethe's poem 'Der Fischer' (The Fisherman) might rival better-known versions for voice and piano, while it makes use of the harp's unique ability to depict the ripple and flow of water. 'Friede in Jesus' (Peace in Jesus) is a gentle, deeply-felt hymn, and 'Weihnachtslied' (Christmas Song) gives the harmonium a musette-like drone beneath the angelic harp to suggest the shepherds in the field. The vocal works are interspersed with three substantial and evocative pieces for two harps, full of richly varied colors and textures. Mezzo-soprano Sophie Marilley sings with sensitivity and admirable clarity, though the acoustic has so much reverberation it is sometimes hard to discern the actual voice; the harp playing is lovely, supple and compelling. In all, this is delightful and fascinating.
