Notes & Reviews:
There was a "French Mozart" who most pleasurably satisfied the social and cultural needs of high society: François Devienne, a musical multitalent, virtuoso, composer, and sought-after flute teacher.
Devienne originally had nothing at all to do with a frightfully expensive diamond necklace, that was "stolen". When Cardinal Rohan, his employer and a prelate fond of luxury items, was imprisoned during the course of the affair, the musician lost his job. Just as proficient on the bassoon as on the flute, Devienne long remained without permanent employment. He earned his livelihood in the Chapel of the Swiss Guard and was uncommonly productive: twelve extremely successful operas, a number of solo concertos, and immense amounts of chamber music, above all for wind instruments, flowed from his pen.
The extraordinary quality of Devienne's works has Villa Musica is one of the chameleons of chamber music. This ensemble so exquisitely changeable in its instrumental dimensions has produced countless first class recordings in cooperation with MDG. Ingo Goritzki has once again assembled an all-star lineup for his recording of Devienne's six oboe sonatas. The proven pianoforte specialist Kristian Nyquist joins forces with him; Sergio Azzolini demonstrates his extraordinary talent even in finely nuanced continuo playing; and Diego Cantalupi on the lute and guitar and Ilze Grudel on the cello supply an accompaniment full of splendid color and variety.
