Notes & Reviews:
With the Heather and Small Birds was inspired by poetry of Welsh bard John Ceiriog Hughes. Tann pays homage throughout the work to several Welsh hymns and folk songs. The seed of inspiration for the alto saxophone concerto, In the First, Spinning Place came from Fern Hill, a high-spirited poem about youth from Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas. From the Feather to the Mountain was motivated by images of clouds, landscapes and mountains near Tann's residence in the Adirondacks. A rhapsody for violin and orchestra, Here, The Cliffs was influenced by a striking rock formation near Tann's home in South Wales. From Afar was inspired by Hilary Tann's lengthy stay and travels in and around Kyoto, Japan.
