Chamber repertoire for standard concert flute abounds, but cousins of the flute - like the piccolo, alto flute, and bass flute - are often relegated to cameos and overlooked for starring roles. It is a true rarity for all of these family members to be featured together on one disc. On "The Dreams of Birds" eight of America's leading composers have created works for flute sorceress Jenni Olson and company, allowing bold exploration of the full sonic range of the flute family.

All the selections were written for this recording. Bear McCreary's Incantation for flute, bassoon, and harp starts with piccolo and contrabassoon to explore the extremes of registers this combination can produce. Then she switches to bass flute and plays in the same register as the bassoon. You get the idea. The sounds are unexpected, yet make dramatic sense. The piece Moonrise by Joachim Horsley comes with an adorable story about the composer's two-year-old son. And so it goes. Olson is an accomplished flutist, and her collaborators play very well, too. The sound is excellent, and the composers have contributed to the notes.
