Notes & Reviews:

In much the same way as he championed Mahler, conductor Bruno Walter was a tireless advocate for Bruckner during his American years. This period in his life fell at a time when the quality of the Austrian mystic's works was being called into serious question. Here the listener is privileged to hear two of Walter's earliest Bruckner performances with the NBC Symphony Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra, taken from broadcast recordings and reproduced here in the best possible sound.

American Record Guide, November/December 2012
Walter's Bruckner 9 was originally recorded by CBS with the Philadelphia Orchestra on acetate broadcast masters circa 1946. It was originally marketed as a 78-rpm set, but soon was as available as an LP. The performance is smooth, sleek, and splendidly shaped, played, and recorded. The sleek Philadelphia sound, luscious and almost tangible, might be thought unsuited to the craggy contours of the work, but somehow it all coalesced into a very good recording. It served me well until stereo recordings came along. I remember it fondly and am glad it's been revived.
