A disclaimer: I taught Mr Rackers in music history classes when he was a doctoral student at the Eastman School of Music. (He was an excellent student!) He now teaches at the University of South Carolina. This is a beautifully played program of four important piano works: the Bach Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, Schumann's Fantasy, La Valse by Ravel, and the Bartok sonata. I appreciate his unflappable virtuosity in the Ravel and Bartok and the highly expressive accounts of the Bach and Schumann. In every case, he seems committed to letting the composer's voice - as he hears it - come through more clearly than any particular interpretive idiosyncrasy of his own. It's refreshing. Unfortunately, the sound of the release heavily favors low-to midrange frequencies and thus often reminds me of old recordings by Artur Schnabel. Some judicious use of an equalizer improves it quite a bit, though.
