Notes & Reviews:

On the heels of their extremely successful Shostakovich string quartet project the Mandelring Quartett now embark on another ambitious project: the complete string chamber music of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The first volume in the anticipated set, this recording features the early string quartets that would prove Mendelssohn to be not only remarkably adept in the Romantic vernacular, but an imaginative, sophisticated musical narrator.

American Record Guide, November/December 2012
This is the first volume of what is sure to be another excellent set of Mendelssohn quartets by yet another excellent German group. The only problem I have with this recording is what seems to be an odd microphone set-up in Quartet 1. The (excellent) first violin always seems to stand out, as if he were a soloist. Perhaps the engineer did it to maintain a kind of continuity of sound between the actual solo passages in the first violin part and his sound in the rest of the piece. But that certainly isn't the case in the recordings of the other two quartets. The A-minor Quartet is filled with energetic and emotionally-charged four-way conversations (that sometimes seem almost like eloquent arguments), and the 1823 E-flat Quartet has an excellent and congenial ebb and flow of nicely-balanced voices.
