Considered one of the foremost soloists of his day, Aurelio Magnani was the father of the modern Italian clarinet school. His pupils filled prestigious positions in orchestras worldwide. He was also a composer, having studied in Bologna, and in addition to operas wrote extensively for his own instrument. These fantasies, paraphrases and melodies embrace florid virtuosity and melting lyricism alike, and are inspired and sophisticated works revealing the best in Italian style. Sergio Bosi is Principal Solo Clarinet in the Orchestra Regionale delle Marche and teaches at the G. Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro. As a promoter of Italian repertoire he records for Naxos, Bongiovanni, Arcam Cambridge, Mondomusica EMI, winning critical acclaim and awards.

This release is a worthwhile discovery. Magnani is a genuine composer with craft and utterance. Although his compositions are clearly products of 19th Century Italy, full of bel canto melodies and dramatic technical passages, they are sincere and enjoyable. His themes are simple yet attractive; his writing is challenging, his pacing is excellent; and his harmonies, while standard for their time, are expressive and the driving force in the music. The performances are fully committed. Bartoldi is a superb keyboardist and chamber musician, delivering great energy and color to match his excellent touch and technique; and he always gives the scores what they need, whether it is a guitar-strumming accompaniment or a full-throated opera orchestra. Bosi boasts terrific fingers, nimble articulation, and a brilliant solo personality. The quality of Magnani's music is still evident, and curious listeners may find this album worth the time.
