Notes & Reviews:

Steffen Schleiermacher and Andreas Seidel have gathered together pieces for violin and piano representing all of Morton Feldman's compositional periods, performed with flawless musical intuition. The selections range from the early "Piece for Violin and Piano," with which Feldman introduced himself to New York's music world, to his late homage "For John Cage," which fills a CD all on its own.

"I just sat there and behaved myself." He was neither an enfant terrible nor a bad boy, but Morton Feldman had his own way of doing things that made him different from his contemporaries in just about everything. At a time when serial compositional techniques were the latest rage, he was writing pieces in a dynamic black-and-white. er, when American minimalists were hammering their patterns to the beat of motoric rhythms, Feldman's patterns formed a tonally subtle world full of nuances and colors. And he took his time: "for John Cage" is almost eighty minutes long - which makes it one of his shorter late works!

It is with flawless musical intuition that Steffen Schleiermacher fills Feldman's sparsely notated scores with life. Joining forces with Andreas Seidel, he opens up an impressive panorama, and in the "piece for four pianos" he even performs with himself in quartet form in what is a miracle of technique and a sensuous sound experience of a special kind.
