Notes & Reviews:

The Will-o'-the-Wisps in Town is an extraordinary fairy tale cantata created by the Danish composer Per Nørgård and his close friend, author Suzanne Brøgger, on the basis of a little known fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. This world premiere recording focuses on the charismatic "Marsh With", sung by mezzo-soprano Helene Gjerris, who also premiered the work in Birmingham, UK, at the international celebration of the 200th anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen's birth. Helene Gjerris has captivated audiences and composers since the mid-1990s. Several new works have been written especially for her. In contemporary music in particular her charismatic performance comes into its element.

The Guardian, August 2012
It's a fascinatingly approachable piece, sometimes recalling Pierrot Lunaire or The Soldier's Tale, but more often conjuring up its own, rather quirky fairytale world, full of typical N°rgsrd gestures and slithering harmonic allusions.

American Record Guide, January/February 2013
The program includes the instrumental composition Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking, scored for the same instrumentation as Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time; the title refers to a Walt Whitman poem, part of Leaves of Grass, paying tribute to the sea - though the work has less to do with the sea than with the idea of waves or oscillations in general and a kind of metaphorical connection from Norgard's native Denmark to Hawaii. (Hawaiian chant, according to the composer, inspires some of its melodic material.) The performances are first rate and the sound is magnificent. Bonus DVD included.
