Notes & Reviews:
This long-awaited live performance, from the Royal Festival Hall in October 1954, joins SOMM's growing collection of unforgettable performances by a conductor who genuinely loved French music and programmed it regularly in his concerts. He first conducted the Symphony in the presence of the composer - whom he knew well and who was the soloist in a Mozart Piano Concerto - in an otherwise all-Saint-Saëns program. Sir Thomas never recorded the work commercially, and this live performance is very precious.
