Notes & Reviews:

The resident chorale of Disney Hall, recognized as one of the world's premier choruses, pays tribute to the late mystic minimalist, composer of the best-selling Symphony of Sorrowful Songs

Grant Gershon programmed Gorecki's Miserere during his very first season as Music Director of the chorale

The composer died on 12 November 2010, and this recording was driven by an urgent interest in preserving and appreciating his choral works

The follow-up to their debut Decca Classics album of music by Nico Muhly showcases the extraordinary emotional power of the full 110-voice Master Chorale singing unaccompanied

These are the first major label recording of both Five Marian Songs and Lobgesang

The New York Times calls the choirs "inspired", The New York Observer declares it "a superb vocal ensemble", and the Los Angeles Times proclaims it "matchlessly polished"

American Record Guide, January/February 2013
The Lobgesang is an 8-minute choral commemoration of the 600th anniversary of Johann Gutenberg's invention of the printing press. It's an a cappella work; only at the very end is a glockenspiel added to tinkle out a series of pitches derived from the letters of Herr Gutenberg's celebrated name. Here Gorecki's repetitive style creates some joy, and the Angelenos are happy to respond with a warm, embracing, unabashedly American choral sound. Also attractive is the late composer's set of five Polish songs that pay homage to the church hymns and folk songs of his homeland. 'Matko Niebieskiego Pana', the second of the five, is a lengthy 10-minute affair. The others are shorter and more to the point. The singing is lovely; but you have to wonder why Decca - of all labels - couldn't supply translations of the Marian texts. They are in Polish, for crying out loud - a language most listeners around the world don't speak. I liked the music a lot son.
