Notes & Reviews:
Keyboard music was rarely printed for most of the 16th century, but in an attempt to provide for amateurs, printers began publishing arrangements of popular vocal works for keyboard which formed the earliest known repertoire for the instrument. The focus of this release is four composers who worked in this medium: the Cavazzonis and Gabrielis, who documented the workings of ricercares, chansons, hymns, and toccatas of their time. These works evince the long development of the Italian Renaissance keyboard style.
American Record Guide, November/December 2012
The playing here is more than competent, but I cannot call it engaging. Far too often the music simply does not flow coherently. This is especially true of the chanson intabulations, where there is little if any sense of vocal phrasing. The composers were popularly celebrated as organists, but I cannot imagine that being the case if their performances were as lacking in personality as these. In the 16th Century most organ performances would have been improvised, but even written works should be performed with a feeling of animation and spontaneity. Here everything sounds deliberate and calculated.
