Notes & Reviews:
This unique disc, a selection of the most hauntingly beautiful and moving Gregorian chants for the Feasts of the Cross, was inspired by the mood of the Lithuanian Hill of Crosses. The deeply impressive scene was erected as a monument against religious oppression under Communist rule and has served to inspire many with its great beauty. Graces & Voices draw on the spiritual power of the place to feed a spring of beauty in Gregorian chant that will both soothe and inspire.

In the notes, Dr Franz Karl Prassl mentions the "vast amount of detailed information about performance practice in its staffless neume notation"; but it doesn't sound to me as though Graces & Voices has departed very much from the received tradition, except, perhaps, in the treatment of rhythm. Recent scholarship has suggested that medieval chant notation also signifies a more flexible treatment of pitch than we are now used to hearing. I don't hear any of that in this performance. But this takes nothing away from the quality of the singing. The women produce a pure sound. Notes are in English, but texts are in Latin and German only.
