Vivaldi, Antonio : Sonata for musette & continuo in G minor ("Il Pastor fido" no 6, inauthentic, by Nicolas ChedevilleNotes & Reviews:
The latest addition to Brilliant Classics' ever-growing catalogue of Vivaldi recordings features oboe sonatas played by an Italian ensemble steeped in both tradition and new scholarship. Oboist Paolo Pollastri not only provides the centerpiece of this disc with his senstive playing; he also conducted most of the attendant research in repertoire curation and performance practice. Historical practice and period instruments make this notable, while the colorful combination of cello, bassoon, and harpsichord as basso continuo, and expertly elegant playing make it a gem.
American Record Guide, January/February 2013
The difficulty in comparison is that Mr Pollastri's recording here uses period instruments. It's an enjoyable performance, sensitive and crafted with subtlety. Overall, his tone is excellent and his sense of phrasing is good. While the ambience of period instruments can be a delightful departure from the typical sounds of the day, they can wear the ear thin working through an entire program of the same music. These are good performances, it is a well-engineered recording, and the musicians are high-caliber, but the choice between period instrument and modern instrument is yours.
