Notes & Reviews:

To visit the great Venetian cathedrals in the 17th century was to bow deeply to the polychoral or "cori spezzati" style that reigned there, pioneered by Giovanni Gabrieli. The young Heinrich Schutz was no exception. Unable to resist the sparkling sounds arising from polychoral writing and antiphonal placement, Schutz carried the style back to his native Germany. Capella Murensis and Les Cornets Noirs here present with absolute fidelity works by Schutz and Gabrieli that epitomize the high Ventian style.

Works on the CD are arranged alternating between the two composers - each Schütz vocal number followed by a Gabrieli instrumental one. It's programming that works very well. Splendid performances are provided by the vocal ensemble Cappella Murensis and Les Cornets Noirs, an instrumental ensemble made up of brass, strings, and organ.... ... read more ...

These performances are simply splendid. The wind players of Les Cornets Noirs, a group founded in 1997, are astounding for their precision of ensemble and intonation with period instruments that are notoriously difficult to play in tune. They take their name from the black leather covering sometimes found on the wooden cornetto. The harmonious growling of the low brass in Gabrieli's 15-part Canzona in the Fourth Tone is especially unforgettable. Clearly these are players and singers who are undaunted by the challenges posed by the spatial separation involved in these performances.
