Notes & Reviews:
As one of Britain's most respected and versatile musicians, Sir Richard Rodney Bennett has produced over two hundred works for the concert hall, and fifty scores for film and television, as well as having been a writer and performer of jazz songs for over fifty years.
This disc of compositions and arrangements performed by the BBC Singers showcases some of his most popular and beguiling works for choir and voice, drawn from classical and jazz music and featuring his ever-popular work "A Good-Night." This new release on Signum with the BBC Singers follows two other composer-led discs: Remoter Worlds (SIGCD144), featuring the music of Judith Bingham, and Choral Images (SIGCD092), featuring the music of Sir Michael Tippett.
American Record Guide, March / April 2013
This makes a lovely tribute to Richard Rodney Bennett, who died peacefully at his New York home on Christmas Eve. Bennett was a composer who excelled in a number of musical genres: the British choral tradition, film-scoring, collaborative piano, and jazz. He also wrote a full-length ballet, Isadora, which was premiered by the Royal Ballet in 1981. His superb work for film can be heard in such movies as "Far from the Madding Crowd", "Nicholas and Alexandra", and "Murder on the Orient Express".
