Notes & Reviews:

Melodi Cantores, a vocal ensemble specializing in early music collaborates with the alta acappella ensemble, La Pifarescha, which consists of a fascinating and diverse selection of instruments such as shawms, sacbuts and bagpipes. The work performed on this SACD was written by Gabrielli for the feast day of Saint Roch in 1608.

Conductor Elena Sartori is also the organist for the solo pieces, which sound glorious on the mean tone-tuned 1565 Antegnati organ in the Mantuan Basilica. Sartori's skill in conducting is exemplified by her interpretation of the repetitive "ora pro nobis" petitions and very long list of Mary's attributes in Litaniae Beatissimae Mariae Virginis. The accumulating glory of the repeated phrase drives forward to the final Agnus Dei with confidence and fervent power. Notes, bios, texts in Latin. There are a number of very fine recordings of Venetian ceremonial music, and this ranks among them.
