Notes & Reviews:
Ancient Byzantine chants begin this 1,000-year journey from Constantinople to California, followed by musical encounters with Crusaders and Venetians, including Greek and Latin polyphony from Renaissance Crete. East meets West again at St. Sophia Cathedral in Los Angeles, where Frank Desby founded a tradition of Greek-American choral music with his Californian colleagues. The tour comes full circle with the mystical ecstasy of Radiant Cloud, a sonic icon of the Transfiguration by Athenian composer Michael Adamis.
Los Angeles Times
Sung gorgeously ... like jeweled light flooding the space.
American Record Guide, January/February 2013
As in all their earlier releases, both the traditional and contemporary works are sung by Capella Romana with great subtlety. Particularly interesting are John Plousiadenos's kontakion for St Thomas Aquinas, a musical document of the contacts between Byzantine musicians and the west following the fall of Byzantium in 1453. Also unusual is Leontaritis's motet, 'Ad Dominum cum tribularer', which could be by Palestrina. The excellent booklet notes by Alexander Lingas and translations make this a fascinating and enjoyable release.
