This recording presents some very familiar and much-loved music in an unexpected format. Ten of Jerome Kern and George Gershwin's greatest songs - songs almost everyone has heard - are performed in transcriptions for string quartet (and clarinet). Gershwin's Lullaby, an original composition for String Quartet, is also included. The collection was produced by Judith Sherman.

The Alexander Quartet plays with lovely phrasing, excellent balance, and fine teamwork, and they bring an array of color and sentiment to the scores. The renditions are so delightful and effortless that the only logical solution after the conclusion of the short program is to begin it again with a refill of a favorite beverage. The Davis arrangements are well done, too, and Lluna infuses them with a smoky sound, heartfelt lyricism, tasteful vibrato, and elegant jazz ornaments. His sound sometimes loses clarity and resonance in the throat tones and high register, but otherwise he blends nicely with the strings. Clarinetists who are interested in adding good transcriptions to their library should give this album a listen.
