Notes & Reviews:
With a vintage all-star cast from the highly acclaimed Teatro di Torino, Warner Classics/Cetra release the 1941 production of Giuseppe Verdi's La forza del destino. Featuring one of the leading dramatic sopranos of the era, Maria Caniglia as Donna Leonora, as well as many other much-admired artists, we hear a remastered version of this performance for the first time.

There is a great deal of nostalgia involved in reviewing these recordings. Cetra has now published its Verdi collection of 17 operas (two of Aïda) broadcast by Italian Radio (RAI) in the 1940s and 50s. This group of five is the second installment. The singers are presumably some of the best, or at least best known, of their time. None of these recordings would qualify as a first choice now. The series is not just a nostalgic souvenir d'un temps perdue, but a glimpse of the musical practices of the time.
