Album Notes

Now that all three of La 5a Estacion's members have found different solo projects and the band is history, it's well worth looking back at their career as hitmakers and innovators. Their four solo albums sold nearly two-million units worldwide, and they left a mark on rock en español forever with their meld of corridos, hooky rock, norteño, contemporary country, and shimmering pop. Recuerdame con Cartasy y Algo Mas . . . Los Exitos collects 16 of the band's best-known tunes including "Niña" (that cops the organ vamp from "Strawberry Fields Forever"), "El Sol No Regresa," "Esperare Despierta," a live version of "Perdicion," and "Te Quiero." This last track, even with its mariachi horns, reveals perhaps better than any other cut here, the direction that the once rebellious Natalia Jiménez -- the group's lead vocalist -- would be heading toward with her self-titled debut solo offering from 2011. Short of owning La 5a Estacion's albums, this comp, especially for the money, is a grand introduction as well as a fitting tribute to a truly innovative band. ~ Thom Jurek
