Notes & Reviews:

The premiere of Stravinsky's Scare in Paris on 29 May 1913 was the occasion of one of the most famous scandals in music when this revolutionary masterpiece presented the audience with a completely new world of sounds and rhythms which caused a riot in the Theatre des Champs-Elysees.

Philadelphia Public Ledger
Unless you can feel the primitive urge... The Rite of Spring will merely seem one more horrible jargon from the start to the finish, sheer discord with no right to a place on the same program with true music.

American Record Guide
Both The Rite of Spring and Agon receive performances that leave little to be desired, save perhaps a certain sharpness of focus in the latter, and sheer pulverizing power in the former, but Ashkenazy certainly has the measure of the music and he communicates his intentions to the players effectively, delivering performances that are colorful and well-paced. The best item on the disc, though, is this gutsy and propulsive Symphony in Three Movements. Ashkenazy energizes the outer movements most impressively (sound sample), and captures the stylized elegance of the central Andante with confidence and ease.
