Album Summary
Ensemble ComposerNotes & Reviews:
Successful and well-known during his lifetime, the French composer George Onslow (1784- 1853) is virtually forgotten today. His 36 string quartets and 34 string quintets were held in the highest regard, and he was regularly placed in the front rank of composers. His work was admired by both Beethoven and Schubert, the latter modeling his own two-cello quintet (D956) on those of Onslow and not, as is so often claimed, on those of Boccherini. Schumann, perhaps the foremost music critic during the first part of the 19th century, regarded Onslow's chamber music on a par with that of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. Ripe for rediscovery, this recording presents four of the composer's String Quartets played by the Quatuor Ruggieri on period instruments.
American Record Guide, March / April 2013
This excellent recording by the French Ruggieri Quartet includes a fine essay about the reasons Onslow. These musicians have chosen three works that are strikingly different in character. They show Onslow as a master of the sturm und drang way of writing for strings as well as a master of counterpoint. His unique compositional style incorporates the influence of Mozart and Haydn. II is a minuet that seems to be a commentary on some of Mozart's minuets from his 6 Haydn Quartets, and III is a stunningly beautiful chromatic Largetto played with mutes.
