Notes & Reviews:
Offered together for the first time, this new SACD remastering from Praga features historic recordings of three acclaimed concertos by Dmitri Shostakovich, performed by the soloists who made them famous. David Oistrakh is heard in the first Violin Concerto, the earliest work of the trio, dating from 1947. Mstislav Rostropovich, backed by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, is soloist in the first Cello Concerto. The album's centerpiece is a performance of the lighthearted second Piano Concerto featuring Leonard Bernstein as soloist, conducting the New York Philharmonic from the keyboard.
American Record Guide, January/February 2013
Great music, great recordings, two of them made within a year or so of the compositions (PC 2 & CC) and two by people who knew the composer well and under his supervision (Oistrakh & Rostropovich). The music was new, and that is both good and not so good. It is good because it was fresh and exciting; it is not so good because pieces of music take years to reveal all their dimensions and subtleties. Many Shostakovich pieces sound much better now than when they were new. We understand his language better. (I would argue that that is true of all music: it's better now than when it was just written.) But overall, these concertos sound as good here as they did 20 or 40 or 50 years later.
