Notes & Reviews:

Franz Hummel is widely acclaimed as one of Europe's most original composers. He began his career as a virtuoso pianist, performing in concert throughout Europe and the USA. Two new compositions - Hatikva and Fukushima - are here performed by Elena Denisova, Giora Feidman and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
In the early 1960s, German pianist Franz Hummel (b. 1939) quickly made his name as a concert and recording artist well versed in the standard literature. He has become one of the most prolific and respected composers in postmodern Europe. Here, renowned Russian maestro Alexei Kornienko and the Moscow Symphony present in concert two of his single movement "symphonies" for solo instrument and orchestra. Fukushima (Violin Symphony) is a tortured lament on the atomic destruction that befell Hiroshima in August 1945; and Hatikva (Clarinet Symphony) is a Klezmeresque fantasy on the Israeli national anthem that evokes the Jewish search for a homeland. Acclaimed Russian violinist Elena Denisova is the soloist in Fukushima, and longtime Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra clarinetist Giora Feidman is the soloist in Hatikva, where Hummel sits at the keyboard and at the midpoint improvises a cadenza with Feidman. The Moscow Symphony tackles the program with great power, sensitivity, and professionalism. Hummel is a superb pianist who plays with fantastic touch and color.
