On this fascinating album, Ensemble Chronochromie pays musical homage to one of the greatest poets of the 20th century - Federico Garcia Lorca. The disc's program of works for choir, soloists and guitar includes the poet's own compositions as well as those of his teacher Manuel de Falla in addition to works by Rodrigo, Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Ferrer. The guitar, a staple of flamenco and the music of Andalusia in general, is featured in Rodrigo's Invocación y danza, written in honor of de Falla. The featured soloist is Benjamin Valette.

Also interspersed in the program are two guitar solos, Falla's Homenaje to Debussy, and Rodrigo's daunting Invocacion y Danza. Valette's playing is clean, but rather unimaginative. While I'd enjoy these in a concert recital, they can't compete against the current crop of recordings. Compare the electrifying performance of the Rodrigo by Xuefei Yang (M/J 2011).
