Notes & Reviews:

On this pure audio bluray release, artistic director Øyvind Gimse and his associate Geir Inge Lotsberg initially chose two pieces that represent, in their opinion, "the most beautiful music ever composer for the string orchestra": Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence and his Serenade for Strings. Aiming for a 90 minute program, this left 30 minutes to record. TrondheimSolistene and 2L asked fans worldwide what they would like to hear. The majority voted Nielsen's Suite Opus 1, a little gem that would exploit the Trondheim Soloists' singular way with Nordic repertoire. TrondheimSolistene are regarded as one of the top chamber orchestras in the world. Their DIVERTIMENTI and FOLK STYLE were both nominated for a total of five American GRAMMY Awards in categories "Best Small Ensemble", "Best Engineered Album" and "Best Surround Sound Album".

American Record Guide, November/December 2012
As in Part I of "Souvenir", the sonics are exceptional, boasting an ideal balance of warmth, detail, tonal beauty, and presence - including the striking palpability of both the instruments and the performance-space ambiance (a small, acoustically pristine church). The playing is lovely, too. The music comes through with a freshness and joy seldom captured on any sort of encoding, analog or digital. The Trondheim Soloists' smallish string choirs and lovely timbral blending (together with the astonishing clarity of the recording) make an especially convincing case for this rendering of Souvenir de Florence as a stringorchestral piece rather than (as originally written) a string sextet, combining the original's chamber-music intimacy and precision with the string orchestra's greater power and weight. Nielsen's touching elegy benefits likewise; quieter moments in particular have a rapt purity. As Berlioz once pointed out, sometimes it takes a larger ensemble to play very softly.

Whether encoded as a high-resolution download, Blu-ray, or on vinyl, this revealing and delightful recording will likely please and gratify all who love Tchaikovsky's Serenade and indeed anyone curious about state-of-the art recording technology. As no doubt also will a forthcoming second installment from 2L of the Trondheim Soloists, playing Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence. I'll be looking to add that to my LP shelves too.
