On Paper Clips, trombonist Malloy proves the instrument's capabilities of being a driving force and, along with pianist Rojahn, its collaborative appeal. An unabashed champion for the trombone, Malloy commissioned each work on this album specifically to expand the often overlooked instrument's repertoire. These works cast the trombone in a new light, presenting it as a tool fit for expressing emotional, lyrical, and melodic passages.

I was not immediately captured by Andy Malloy's playing; not every note is perfectly in tune or pure in tone. These things are more evident in the works recorded in a studio (most of the program) than in a recital hall (14 Prayers) and more evident when Malloy plays a smaller-bore trombone. But in the big picture, those are minor moments. It is an honest recording, something I grew to enjoy and appreciate. The playing by both Malloy and pianist Karolina Rojahn is very good. These new works, and this recording, significantly enrich the trombone literature.
