Notes & Reviews:

Enescu is one of the great composers, although the world has yet to realise the extent of his achievement. His small published uvre of 33 opus numbers belies the amount of music he produced: he composed prolifically but, as he was both a perfectionist and a busy performer, much of his music is still unknown, allowing us to present herein, the Unknown Enescu.

American Record Guide, May/June 2013
My favorite piece here is the four-movement Airs in the Romanian Style for solo violin from 1926, the same year as the great Violin Sonata 3. It contains much material that resembles the sonata and the Impressions of Childhood from 1940. There is also a very fine movement for piano quartet, Nocturne 'Villa d'Avrayen', from 1931-36. It is a rich-textured work written in a dark, late-romantic style and shows a maturity and perfection that appear only fleetingly in the early music. The last piece here is the very chromatic 'Andantino Malinconico', written in 1951 as a sight-reading test for the Paris Conservatory. It is full of modulations and enharmonic notations calculated to trip up the students. It is just over two minutes, but it is a very mature work.
