Notes & Reviews:
Hyperion has long been a champion of music from the Medieval era. Combining the highest levels of scholarship with brilliant musicianship and award-winning recordings, Hyperion has helped open the ears of a generation of listeners to the musical riches of the Middles Ages. On this intriguing release, John Potter, Christopher O'Gorman and Rogers Covey-Crump offer a selection of music from the Ars antiqua period. Focusing on a genre of sacred vocal works called the Conductus, the singers explore Western music's first experiments in polyphony. Extensive booklet notes by musicologist Mark Everist probe into the intricacies of performance practice as well as analyzing the music and poetry in context.
Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2012
Everything is immaculately clean: every passing dissonance is dead in place and nothing extrinsic is added to the music. It sounds lovely. What is just slightly odd about these performances is that they seem not to make much distinction between songs in praise of the Virgin Mary, songs of political anger and songs about a whore...But these are seriously classy performances.
The Observer, September 2012
The poems are about life, death, salvation and, naturally, the frail virtues of women...Three tenors - John Potter, Christopher O'Gorman and Rogers Covey-Crump - deliver these explorations with unerring skill and conviction.
BBC Music Magazine, December 2012
Conductus proves that ascetic simplicity can be as deeply moving and aesthetically breath-taking as the mst complex, heart-on-sleeve music...It's hardly necessary to mention they are superb, their precise diction well-served by Jeremy Summerly's production and Julian Millard's engineering.
American Record Guide, January/February 2013
At first much of the recording sounds like an academic exercise, and along with the excellent notes by Mark Everist, it does form the first comprehensive recording devoted to this medieval genre. I found that after a few more opportunities to sit and listen to these (I would strongly recommend following along with the idiomatic translations), the subtleties of both the music and the performance became more evident. As one of my teachers termed both the conductus and the early motet, this was truly "clerical chamber music", filled with verbal games and intricate meanings, all reflecting the new musical world of Paris around 1200.
