Focusing on a genre of sacred vocal works called the Conductus, the singers explore Western music's first experiments in polyphony. Everything is immaculately clean: every passing dissonance is dead in place and nothing extrinsic is added to the music. It sounds lovely. What is just slightly odd about these performances is that they seem not to make much distinction between songs in praise of the Virgin Mary, songs of political anger and songs about a whore...But these are seriously classy performances.

At first much of the recording sounds like an academic exercise, and along with the excellent notes by Mark Everist, it does form the first comprehensive recording devoted to this medieval genre. I found that after a few more opportunities to sit and listen to these (I would strongly recommend following along with the idiomatic translations), the subtleties of both the music and the performance became more evident. As one of my teachers termed both the conductus and the early motet, this was truly "clerical chamber music", filled with verbal games and intricate meanings, all reflecting the new musical world of Paris around 1200.
